For a number of years the DPRS has worked closely with the two
unions in the United Kingdom representing the interests of film
and television directors; the Directors Guild of Great Britain
(DGGB – www.dggb.co.uk) and
the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union
(BECTU – www.bectu.org.uk).
Following the successful outcome of the campaign to secure
payments for the secondary use of television works in 2001,
it was decided that a single and united strategy was imperative.
The relationship between the three organisations was formalised
by the establishment of the Directors’ Alliance.
The Directors’ Alliance meets on a regular basis to
debate matters of current concern and to decide on policy
ahead of meetings of the Directors’ Forum. The Alliance
monitors the implementation of the Contract Guidelines and
Codes of Practice, and has recently conducted a wide-ranging
survey of directors’ fees. It intends to publish a Directors’
Alliance Rate Card in the near future.
Although the DPRS concentrates principally on matters concerning
authorial rights,, and the two trade unions on issues of a
more general industrial nature, these often overlap. DPRS
members are encouraged to contact the Society if they have
any concerns which they would like the Alliance to consider.
