Two BAFTAs for Bigelow and another for Arnold: further success for female directors PDF Print E-mail

The 2010 BAFTA awards saw Kathryn Bigelow and Andrea Arnold continue from where they left off at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards the previous week, with Bigelow winning Best Director and Best Film, whilst Arnold saw success in the Outstanding British Film category for Fish Tank. Bigelow’s success with her film The Hurt Locker, came at the expense of James Cameron’s Avatar, the highest-grossing picture ever, which was also nominated in the Best Film and Best Director category.

Fish Tank meanwhile, beat off strong competition to be named as the best British film, triumphing over In the Loop, An Education, Moon and Nowhere Boy for the award. Moon director Duncan Jones was selected as winner of the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer trophy, mirroring his own

success with the Film Critics’ Circle in a similar category.

French movie A Prophet picked up the Film Not in the English Language award, beating this year's other critics’ foreign favourite The White Ribbon, whilst Pixar’s Up won in the Animated Film category. British duo Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan were awarded the two top acting prizes for their films A Single Man and An Education, whilst actress Vanessa Redgrave received the Academy Fellowship after a glittering and enduring career in front of the camera.
